REMEMBERING JAYBO QDR remembers a legend and our friend Jay Butler, who lost his battle with prostate cancer Sunday February 7th, 2010. Jay was surrounded by his family and friends.
Jay and his family were very touched by all of the heartfelt messages and well wishes that QDR listeners have sent to them over the last several weeks. Jaybo has been part of the QDR family for over 20 years. He will be missed, but never forgotten. Please share your memories and thoughts of Jay below on our Message Wall, or cards can be sent to WQDR and will be forwarded to the family.
Jay Butler c/o 94.7 WQDR 3012 Highwoods Blvd - Ste 201 Raleigh, N.C. 27604 Visitation: Thursday from 6-9pm at Fuquay Varina Baptist Church. Memorial Service: Friday at 1pm at Fuquay Varina Baptist Church. The church is located at 301 North Woodrow Street in Fuquay Varina .
A little bit about Jaybo... Jay Butler was born Joseph Butler Chrietberg on May 22, 1951 in Columbia, South Carolina. He attended Chowan College from 1969-1972 where he majored in Business Administration. He worked at several Triangle area radio stations, including WDNC, WDCG, WYYD, WKIX and eventually made his home on WQDR in 1984. Other than his love for radio, Jaybo was an actor, playing roles in "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Finnian's Rainbow", "Cabaret" and in 1985 got a part in John Irvin's movie"Triple Identity" with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jay was a big man (6'6") with a big heart, who always ended his show with his trademark phrase, " I gotta go...Mama's waitin' in the truck." Family and Friends of Jay Jay helped (2/23/2010 11:53:09 AM) In 1981 I was hired to work at WKIX. The transition from top 40 to country happened shortly thereafter and Jay used the format change to impart many words of wisdom. I was only 18 but Jay (as well as Radio Ron McKay) spent countless hours with me sharing insights on life as well as radio. He took the time to help me when he didn't have to, expected nothing in return. He was a good man.

Jay's Family Jaybo will be missed (2/15/2010 2:27:15 PM) I was so saddened to hear the news of Jay's passing. I've know Jay for many years, and he was a good friend and a great guy. Very family orientated and a real entertainer. I still have a cassette tape of Jaybo and Wheless singing Happy Birthday to me on air. He will truly be missed!

Jaybo and WQDR Families Hot SPICEY Biscuits !! (2/12/2010 4:27:19 PM) I never pass by a Bojangles that I do not hear that line from Jaybo. You could just smell those biscuits hot from the oven when that great voice came over the radio. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours at this difficult time. I lost my husband to cancer 16 years ago on the same day that Jaybo died. Just take it one day at a time.

To Jay Butler's family So sorry to hear the news about Jay- (2/12/2010 2:47:48 PM) Exactly 13 years ago tomorrow, Jaybo called me on my birthday (2/13) at the request of my friends. At that time he was doing the "birthday" call and/or announcement on the radio- which was fun to listen to because of his humor and gentle sincerity. I had just lost my brother at a young age a few days earlier to a heart attack- I was just turning 45- He made my day feel blessed. He was one of a kind!! Thanks, Jay- God Bless You.

Jay's circle of friends, family and co-workers Thank you for sharing Jay with us all (2/12/2010 12:13:15 PM) My thoughts are with you all. My heart weeps with yours. Jay was loved by so many listeners, including myself. He gave many years of joy and entertainment, and many times his voice was the calm in the storm. You will never know how many people he touched and helped with his voice, personality and nature, the number would be astronomical, what a gift he gave! Bless you all for sharing him with us for so many years.

family gone by not forgotten (2/11/2010 12:57:36 PM) I have listened to Jaybo from KIX to QDR, and as others have said he made the show. I met at Longbranch when he was doing promo. I miss him and over the years have often wondered where he was .Then I heard on the radio that he had cancer, then the very next week I heard the tribute, "Go Rest high..", you never forget, Jaybo . My prayers are with you - our loss on earth is Heavens gain, but you always have the memories to keep him alive in your heart

Jay was a great person to Hang around and funny at that. he was what some would call a Gentle Giant.
I am glad I got to see him befor he was moved to UNC while here at Rex.

WQDR Jaybo (2/11/2010 11:02:22 AM) I listened to the Jay and Mike show it seemed like forever, then one monring I tuned in and Jay was gone from the program. I quit listening to QDR and went to another station. I was gone from Raleigh for a few years and when I got back I tuned back in. I am so sorry to hear of his death but I am also so proud of the staff at QDR and the listeners for all that they did for his family. I'll never forget hearing his laugh at Pam's Restaurant or at the State Fair.

Jay's family What a great person (2/10/2010 8:50:33 PM) I worked with Jay for a little over a year when QDR first went from rock to country. I was Promotions Director, and Jay and I went out on lots of promotions and remotes together. He was always such a gentleman and so kind. Also went to see his local premiere of the Raw Deal movie and Shenendoah.Ran into him about five years ago and he told me about his family - with a huge smile on his face.I'm so sad about your loss.My thoughts and prayers will be with you all.

Q-CREW, CURTIS MEDIA Jaybo's passing (2/10/2010 8:48:22 AM) I met Jay sometime in the mid to late 80's. We did alot of charity work and we had a blast together. Jay would come out simply be the life of whatever was going on. Jay loved radio and he loved WQDR. He made the station and was the voice of the station. When he left I was shocked and could not reach him. More to follow..

We were all pretty young, wild and crazy back in the 80's but you never had to be afraid when Jay was around. My heartfelt condolences to Jays Family for their loss. God rest his gentle soul.

Jay Butler Family My condolences (2/9/2010 2:00:20 PM) To Jay's Family,
Jay was one in a million, he always did for others, my most familiar story was the Spring Hope National Pumpkin Festival back in the late 90s in which I asked Jay to be the Guest of Honor. He graciously accepted (only because I worked with his wife). He made the whole town laugh and smile. He will be greatly missed.
