REMEMBERING JAYBO

QDR remembers a legend and our friend Jay Butler, who lost his battle with prostate cancer Sunday February 7th, 2010. Jay was surrounded by his family and friends.

Jay and his family were very touched by all of the heartfelt messages and well wishes that QDR listeners have sent to them over the last several weeks.

Jaybo has been part of the QDR family for over 20 years. He will be missed, but never forgotten. Please share your memories and thoughts of Jay below on our Message Wall, or  cards can be sent to WQDR and will be forwarded to the family.

A little bit about Jaybo...

Jay Butler was born Joseph Butler Chrietberg on May 22, 1951 in Columbia, South Carolina.  He attended Chowan College from 1969-1972 where he majored in Business Administration.  He worked at several Triangle area radio stations, including WDNC, WDCG, WYYD, WKIX and eventually made his home on WQDR in 1984.  Other than his love for radio, Jaybo was an actor, playing roles in "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Finnian's Rainbow", "Cabaret" and in 1985 got a part in John Irvin's movie"Triple Identity" with Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Jay was a big man (6'6") with a big heart, who always ended his show with his trademark phrase, " I gotta go...Mama's waitin' in the truck."

1987 $3000 Giveaway/Jay (2/9/2010 12:31:13 PM)
In 1987 I won the Big Money Giveaway at Northgate Mall and that is when I met Jay-what a super, super nice person. I also got the impression that he was a kind and gentle person even though he was a large person. I missed him on QDR and tried to follow him on the other stations. I have fond memories of that special day with him.

Fondest memories of Jay will be at local remotes introducing country stars at Walnut Creek and Longbranch...also of him giving me a hard time while being champ of "Rebels and Yanks" contest that he and Mike had going in the mid 90's. Jay will be missed, but never forgotten.

I remember listening to jay since i was 14 years old from the time he was on Wkix then Wqdr. listeing to him on the radio was pure joy. He would do something to make me smile and that would set the tone for my day.The year My sister got married she and her husband bought a house in willow springs in the same neighborhood where jay lived. I remember the first time I me him and he was exactly the same as on the radio a kind wonderful man.

the old Q Crew (2/8/2010 8:38:55 PM)
It was so sad hearing this news today. I have such great memories of working with Jay at WDQR - we worked together for 3 1/2 years starting in '89. Jay was such a big man (6'6") that he was constantly breaking the chair in the air studio. An old radio tradition, the rest of us on the old Q Crew (Mike Wheless, Dale Van Horn, BJ, Warren Keyes, etc) used to (good-naturedly) prank and annoy Jay all the time... fun times. Jay was a huge man, a huge voice, and it's hard to believe he's gone.

I thourghly enjoyed Jay and Mike on the morning show for years on my drive to Raleigh. I was very upset about WQDR letting him go. Shame on them, but it was his fans that suffered. Thanks for all the laughs through the years.

A good man will be missed (2/8/2010 8:21:55 PM)
We just want to express our sincere sympathy. Jay was a great person to work with. More than that he had a huge heart, and was such a caring person. There aren't many Jaybo's and we will miss his big smile and wonderful laugh. He brought sunshine to the darkest day. We love him and will miss him. God bless you as you go through this tough time. Remembering Jaybo (2/8/2010 7:50:59 PM)
I remember the time that Tracy Byrd was there in the studio with Jaybo and Mike and I called in to the station to talk to Tracy. I talked with Jaybo first and told him that my husband & I had seen Tracy at the Longbranch and he didn't sing "Keeper of the Stars" and Jaybo let me talk to him on the phone. Jaybo has been greatly missed by all! Our deepest sympathy to all!

I never got the chance to meet the famous JayBo, but I have heard a lot about him. I want to send my heart felt sympathies to his Family and friends, I know from experience how hard it to lose a loved one,one from cancer and one from a drunk driver, instead of mourning them I chose to celebrate them, what better way to celebrate him than on Super Bowel Sunday, we should all celebrate this larger than life man, God Bless you ALL. Jaybo (2/8/2010 3:41:59 PM)
I have been listening to this radio station ever since I was in high school(a long time). The Jay & Mike show was the best there has ever been in the triangle. Jay's voice was so unique. He would do commercials after he left the station and I would say I know that voice. You will be greatly missed. To the Butler family you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I was so sad to hear of Jaybo's passing. He was my favorite morning talk show host and the show has not been the same since he left. When he and Mike were together, the show was the best it has ever been. He will be sorely missed by all who listened to him for many years. Radio lost a true icon yesterday. Go Rest High on the Mountain Jay, you so deserve it.

Jaybo (2/8/2010 3:09:11 PM)
I was very said to see the message this morning on Facebook that Jaybo had lost his fight with cancer. However, we can all take comfort knowing he's in a better place and not hurting anymore. I loved listening to Jay and Mike in the mornings and hated it when Jay left. The recent replays of some of their classics brought a smile to my face and warm memories.
